The
Umrah or Umrah Hajj is a pilgrimage carried out by Muslims from all
around the world at any time of the year. The word Umrah refers to
“visiting a populated location”. According to Islamic Sharia,
Umrah is performing Tawaf and Sa’I around the holy Kabba and
between Al-Marwah and Al-Safa wearing Ihram clothing and being in
Ihram state, either from a Miqat such as Ibrahīm Mursīa,
Zāt-i-'Irq, Yalamlam, Qarnu 'l-Manāzil, Juhfa, Zu 'l-Hulafa, or
from a hilly place. Tawaf refers to circling of the holy Kabba 7
times in a counter-clockwise direction. On the other hand, Sa’I
refers to rapidly walking between Al-Marwah and Al-Safa for 7 times.

At
times Umrah is referred as “lesser pilgrimage” or “minor
Pilgrimage”, the holy Hajj being the higher one which is mandatory
for every financially and physically capable Muslims. But the Umrah
hajj is not highly recommended or mandatory by Islamic Sharia. Umrah
Hajj can be of two types; al-Umrat al mufradah and Umrat al-tammatu.
Al-Umrat
al mufradah is the Umrah which is carried out at a time other than
the time of Hajj. On the other hand, Umrat al-tammatu is the Umrah
which is carried out along with the holy Hajj. More specifically, in
Umrat al-tammatu, the rites of the Umrah Hajj are carried out first
and after that the rites of holy Hajj are carried out.
